Regular everyday posts

It’s been 11 years, feels like 16.

Today is Katie and mines anniversary. We have been married for 11 years although we were together the 5 before that hence the funny title. I thought this post would be better for last year but like most things in my life currently, everything seems to be last minute.

I love her oodles and I love our kids and I love our lives together. She is amazing.

And here are some funny things that have changed in those 16 years.

So how’s life you ask?

Well I am still working for Yammer. And it goes pretty good. Since this whole startup job is new to me, it certainly has been a learning experience. I have done a few interviews for new employees and I get the question a lot of “What is a typical day like?” or “What’s it like working for this company?”.  I always respond with the story of how I tore apart the CEO’s laptop on day 2 and haven’t stopped since.

So work goes well. I am getting tired of the 2 hour round trip commute but at least I got me the wifis so it gives me time to do this blog.

Katie and the girls are doing well. And the two little ones aren’t so little anymore. Between swim classes, preschool, dance starting soon, and just good old fashioned time; they are growing up fast. I still enjoy putting Tara down to bed every night as I get to read to her.

In other news I still haven’t managed to finagle an Xbox out of anyone. I think I have determined it is my new life goal to just acquire one through other means. I was annoyed with mine a few years back after it red ringed half a dozen times. I finally gave up on it, sold it and said I wasn’t going to buy another one. I know they have since fixed those issues, but since I wil hardly have time to play it anyways, I figure just having one magically appear with no cost to me would be better.

Oh and for those that know I finally finished ripping and tagging my entire dvd collection. I actually started this about 4 years ago as I have a lot of DVD’s. So that’s a big old FU to the MPAA. I bought them, I own them and I don’t care if it violates your precious copy protection laws. I wasn’t going to re buy everything in a lesser quality format just to please you anyways. The collection is almost 6 TB in total.

Now I need to go back and rerip my cd’s in full quality as opposed to AAC files. Yeah for more hard drives.

Once again a month goes by…

I was reading an article that says in order to be a successful blogger you should probably average about 1000 words a day. I think I get that in about a month. So successful I’m not but at least I am updating it. I am enjoying the new job and have met some wonderful people. The only downside is that I haven’t hung out with any old friends in a while. However since Bufalo Wild Wings has been gracious enough to open up a new restautrant in San Jose I can catch up with some old friends from Daddytrend.com and that will be fun. I also miss my babies whole bunches. As a stay at home dad I got to spend every moment almost with Tara during the first year. Because my commute adds almost an hour and a half each way I tend to just see them as I put them down to sleep and on the weekends. I miss them and my lovely wife whole bunches. Since we are considering buying a house in these parts (yes we know this is crazy) then hopefully I can shorten the commute and spend more time with them.

So the housing market is still very weird and up in the air in the SF Bay Area. You can find townhouse ( thats a fancy word for apartments ) for around $350k in not quite good neighborhoods. Or you can find million dollar homes that in all reality should not be worth that much. There is just so much fluctuation and variety right now that in some areas there can be as much as a $50-100k difference for between several city blocks. I am sure we might find something we really like at some point so for now we will keep looking and I might keep updating this blog. We will see which one happens first.

New Job, New Commute, and New Car

A whole lot of “news” for me this past month.

As mentioned earlier I had been laid off at Ricoh because of some restructuring there and was looking for a job. I liked that job a lot and was sad to see it go but I believe someone mentioned God closing a door and opening a window. I had done a lot of job hunting last year when I got laid off from Google so I was not looking forward to the prospect. Turns out I had a little luck with me this time around (and a whole lotta help) and I managed to find a great new job within a month. I now work for a company called Yammer. They do a social network enterprise app and so far it has been kind of cool. I got a shiny new 15′ MacBook Pro to work on and I take the train up to San Francisco. It’s kind of a pain due to the hour long commute meaning I need to get up at 6:00 AM but it’s been worth it so far. Also they are looking for a ton of programmers and engineers so you can check out their website for listings is you are interested. Pass it forward or pay it back, either way is good for me.

Speaking of the job. I get to commute by train every day now. A lot of interesting people ride the train. I have seen women in high heels riding Razor scooters, putting on makeup using their laptops webcam, and of course teeny boppers getting very excited and loud about going to a Taylor Swift concert. A few weird guys, including one getting tossed off the train for yelling at himself. And then there were the zombies. Literally a whole group of people dressed like zombies on a night when I had to stay at work late.

Now the other good news is that the job does pay a bit more then my last one so Katie and I can start saving some more. That will however be after we pay for the new car we just bought. She was driving a 88′ Mercury Tracer wagon that was doing alright but had some issues. One of the bigger ones being not really enough comfortable space for the whole family in it let alone giving someone else a ride. Now we can do all of that and my wife gets a car that has buttons in it. So I bought her a new 2011 Ford Escape so I can take the train to work. It makes sense, really it does. Oh and it’s bright lime neon green. You couldn’t lose this car even if you were looking from space.

A week later and life moves on

So we had a new baby last week. You know in case you forgot.

Anyways, After a few adjustments we are just starting our routines and hopefully next week I will start biking to work again. When I lived in Arkansas I had gotten pretty big and opted to start biking to work to lose weight. (Not to mention that whole save on gas thing) Between the food poisoning and the biking I ended up losing about 40 lbs. After being a stay at home dad for a year and then working at Google with all the free food I have since gained back that 40 lbs and then some. I currently sit at about 270. So here’s to another round of summer biking 12 miles a day round trip to help reduce said poundage. I also have a little project  I want to do with mounting a stereo to my bike because it is illegal to ride with headphones in California. (or at least last time I checked) I will hopefully post some pics on how that works out.

So wish me luck world as I embark on my own biggest loser goal and here’s to a new healthier me . Starting next week… after I finish off those cookies… and if the weather’s nice.

I want to join others in the wonderful effort to support Susan and others out there who need it.

Tara has hit the terrible 2s

Ok, so Tara is 2 months shy of her 2nd birthday but her attitude is becoming more and more of a 2 year old. She states her opinion on things which is usually no mommy or no daddy. On top of that she now really gets into some of the temper tantrums. Now this has been a gradual process over about the last 6 months, but now you can tell she is coming up on 2. I think it really got to Sam today. I think he was kind of happy to go out to get me some tums without us. We tried to get Tara to go, but she wanted nothing to do with going out.

I do have to say though, when she is in a good mood she can just be so much fun. She is really obsessed with babies right now. She especially likes baby Lucie, our friends’ 3 month old. She also had a lot of fun coming to my last doctor’s appointment so she could hear her baby sister. I hope the baby fascination sticks.

So yes there are good times and some really not so good. And to think I am looking forward to another. I do have to say that I am really not a fan of being pregnant, and I just want the little girl to get here.

Rental Hunt

Ok… So as I mentioned in my last post we are planning to move before the baby is born… Ugh… The most annoying part is we don’t want to pay rent in 2 places for more then a month or so, cause especially with the rent around here it would be a pain.  So we really can’t move until March 1st, but I am at least trying to get an idea of an idea of what is out there now.  Anyways, so I am using this post to write out our requirements/wishes for our new place.

Requirements:

  • Rent less than $2000/month preferably around $1700/month
  • Allows for 1 small cat… He really is a good cat and one of the family so he must come with

Wishes:

  • Within 10 miles preferably 5 miles of Ricoh in Cupertino so Sam can bike
  • Larger then our current place which is 2br 1.5ba 1088 sq ft (It doesn’t have to necessarily have 3 bedrooms as the girls can share a room, but we do need a place for them to play so a den or something would work too)
  • Washer and Dryer or at least Hookups (I realized with 2 kids at home this will make a big difference)
  • Bigger backyard/patio space (right now Tara’s sandbox takes up pretty much the patio)
  • Preferably 2 full baths so that I don’t have to share with the girls.  One could even be just a shower and not a bathtub, but I would love space separate from the girls.
  • Garage (mainly so we can have storage especially for bikes also could work as a play area for the girls too)
  • Shower curtain not doors on bath (I don’t really want to deal with having to bath kids with the sliding doors on the bath)

Now I think that is everything and it is mostly in order of priority for wishes.  Now I can find some places now that fit to a lot of this, but of course they want someone to move in now not in March.  So I shall wait and see.  If anyone has experience with any property management companies and wants to give me their info that would be great.  Or if you know of a place that would be even better.

Ok… So I haven’t updated in forever.. Now you may be wondering why.  Well it is really because there has been a lot going on in my life and on my mind that I really felt a bit weird writing about all of it.  Now that life is starting to get a bit more straightened out I thought I would write about everything.

So as I have mentioned before, I am pregnant with #2.  It is another little girl.  She is due April 11th, so 100 days from today.  Things have actually gone pretty smoothly so far.  I did have a tumble down the stairs early on, but it was on my butt, so I was fine.  Other then that I have really just been darn worn out.  Chasing an almost 2 year old around while pregnant is a lot of work.  The other stresses that I have been putting myself under probably haven’t helped either.  So Sam had a contract position at Google doing help desk it stuff… Well that contract ran out back in October, so Sam has been job hunting.  Sam was applying everywhere.  Well it actually almost looked like we were going to make a really quick move to Denver.  Now there would have been pluses and minuses of this, but luckily Sam has found work here…  He got a job offer last week… But during all of this I put myself through a lot of stress…  On another note, my funding ends at the end of this month… Now this actually works really well timing-wise since I would actually like some time not working before #2 enters the world.  In all honesty, we would really like for #2 to stay home for the first year in the same way Tara did.  So it may be a bit before I go back to work, but I do plan to.  And we will see how long I really can stay away.

So anyways, yes Sam’s job is here in the bay area, but we are thinking about moving.  Honestly we would like to find someplace cheaper, closer to where he will work, with a washer and dryer and maybe a bit more space.  I know it is a lot to ask, but we can hope. Of course our lease here ends on my due date, so we hope to move in March.  We don’t really want to pay rent in 2 places for too many months.  Yes this does mean we will be moving while I am really really pregnant.

Umm… anything else… Well we did have a good Christmas. Tara got spoiled of course, but it was so much fun watching her Christmas morning.  Other then that she is getting to be a real big girl.  We got her big girl bed for christmas, and now that we finally got the railing so hopefully tomorrow she will move into her bed.  We will see how that goes.

Now to go back to watching more episodes of Smallville.  Hopefully I will post more often.
